News update: Boone gets water grant
The town of Boone has received an expected $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Rural Center to remove sedimentation near a water intake site on Winkler's Creek. The intake is the town's secondary raw water intake site, but became the primary intake site during last year's drought. Sedimentation accumulated from floods and activities on upstream park lands have reduced the capacity of water that can be withdrawn from the intake pool. Restoring the pool behind the dam will provide access to an estimated 12 million gallons on Winkler's Creek and to a 60 million gallon reservoir upstream. Watauga County has also been granted $30,650 for the Water Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Plan. The grant will pay to examine the infrastructure of the areafs water and sewer systems to find ways to improve capacity, efficiency and product.

King Street widening funds approved
The $15.2 million in economic stimulus funds to widen King Street in Boone have now gotten the official stamp of approval. Gov. Bev Perdue announced Wednesday that the King Street widening was among the 31 contracts totaling $73 million awarded for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina, including 11 projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The $15.2 million contract was awarded to Blythe Development Co. of Charlotte to widen 1.1 miles of U.S. 421/King Street. The project had been scheduled to break ground earlier this year, but a lack of N.C. Department of Transportation funds delayed right-of-way acquisitions. From U.S. 321/Hardin Street to east of N.C. 194/Jefferson Road, the road currently varies between two and five lanes in width. The project will widen the two-lane segments to four lanes separated by a raised concrete median and the five-lane segments to six and eight lanes separated by a raised concrete median. Under the contract, work can begin as early as July 27, with project completion set for Dec. 31, 2011. NCDOT has developed a Web site for the King Street project at www.ncdot.gov/projects/US421Widening/
