ASU to take on Montana, McNeese State
Traditional NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) powers Appalachian State, Montana and McNeese State have entered into a six-game agreement that will have Appalachian host Montana in 2012 and travel to face the Griz in Missoula, Mont. in 2013, the three schools announced Thursday.

Sports update: Orioles draft ASU pitcher
The Baltimore Orioles selected Appalachian State pitcher Josh Dowdy in the 38th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft Thursday. He is the 1,136th overall selection. Dowdy joins former ASU teammate Jason Rook in the Orioles’ organization. Dowdy was 6-3 with a 5.07 ERA, striking out 68 and walking just 19. He is the fourth Mountaineer to be picked in the 2009 draft. On Wednesday, relief pitcher Zach Quate (Rays) center fielder Rand Smith (Marlins) and third baseman Isaac Harrow (Yankees) were picked.

Pioneers have two NWC top players

Adam Church and Steve Lake were both named Northwestern 4-A Conference Players of the Year in their respective sports.

Three Mountaineers selected in draft
Appalachian State’s baseball class of 2009 has sent three more players into the professional ranks.

App duo earns honors

Relief pitcher Zach Quate and third baseman Isaac Harrow became just the second and third Appalachian State baseball players in the past two decades to receive all-America recognition when Ping! Baseball named Quate to its third team and picked Harrow as an honorable-mention selection.

Baker also spoke well of Dicus
For starters, in a column printed in Monday’s Watauga Democrat about Will Dicus, I listed several speakers who addressed the crowd at Dicus’s Celebration of Life that was held Sunday. I mistakenly forgot to mention Daniel Baker, a former teammate of Dicus, who also spoke eloquently about his friend.


ASU’s Boyd named to All-State team

Appalachian State third baseman Katie Boyd raked in another postseason honor by earning North Carolina College Sports Information Association All-State University softball team honors. She was also named second team all-Southern Conference and first-team Mideast region.

Alexander Central captures state title
RALEIGH - Freshman pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson gave up just three hits and went the distance as Alexander Central nipped North Davidson 2-1 in the championship game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A softball championships at Walnut Creek Softball Complex Saturday.
