Humane Society officers resign

The Watauga Humane Society is undergoing an abrupt transition as it heads for Saturday's groundbreaking for a new facility.

Executive director Janet Pepin, president Lisa Van Arnam, secretary Susan Dukes, and board members Sarah Gilley and Barbara Doughton recently announced their resignations.

"Change is harder for some organizations than others," Pepin said, her only comment on leaving the position. She had served a one-year contract that expires on July 1.

At the time of recent resignations, there were 13 board members, including officers. Pepin wasn't a voting board member. Shaun Lundy, society vice-president, is temporarily heading the organization until new officers are found.

"We just had a philosophical difference on the board and some people decided to resign," Lundy said. "The majority of the board of directors is still on. We're going to have a special meeting to start looking for some more directors."

A groundbreaking for the new shelter takes place Saturday at 11 a.m., and Lundy said all plans and events will continue as scheduled. The site is on Old US 421 near Don Hayes Road east of Boone.
