Under-15s go worst to first

Lake named all-conference
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State men’s tennis standout Bobby Lake, a former Watauga standout, was named first team all-Southern Conference, the league’s office announced Thursday.

Curry to NBA
DAVIDSON - Stephen Curry, Davidson’s All-American guard, said in a press conference held at the school Thursday that he will enter the NBA draft and forgo his senior season with the Wildcats.

WHS blanks Spartans

It seems the only thing that could stop Watauga’s boys’ tennis team Monday was the weather.

ASU to host Upstate
Appalachian State’s softball team will play USC Upstate for the first time and will play a single game at Tennessee in mid-week action this week.

Bentley takes over program
John Mark Bentley, an assistant coach the past three seasons, will become Appalachian State head wrestling coach for the 2009-10 season. Bentley replaces Paul Mance, who spent the past 33 years as ASU’s head coach.


Pioneers blast Patriots
The gap between first place and last place in the Northwestern 4-A Conference baseball standings is currently 17 runs.

Around the area: Game time changes
Game times for two of Appalachian State University's home baseball games this week have changed. Due to a forecast for inclement weather on Tuesday night, ASU’s game versus North Carolina A&T at Smith Stadium has been moved to 4 p.m.


ASU slips to 11th in tourney
FLORENCE, S.C. - Casey Johnson carded a four-over, 76 Monday and leads Appalachian State’s men’s golf team after 36 holes at the Southern Conference Championship. Johnson has a score of six-over par 150 and stands in 30th with one round remaining.

Commentary: Saturday was golden at the Behr residence

Usually, I devote this space to some column about sports, usually either about Appalachian State or Watauga athletics. We’ll get back to the sports on Wednesday. Today, I offer my congratulations to a couple who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Saturday.

Panthers trip up Watauga late
CHARLOTTE - Providence centerfielder Tyler Zupcic will be Appalachian State’s gain in 2010 when he plays for the Mountaineers. Last Saturday, he represented Watauga’s loss.


Tough road games toughen Pioneers
CHARLOTTE - If Watauga wasn’t made aware of how difficult the state 4-A playoffs could be after last week, they’ll probably never figure it out.

Mountaineers sweep Furman
Michelle Lighton scored the winning run in the second inning and hit a home run in the sixth, while Kayla Richardson threw a one-hitter to give Appalachian State a 3-0 win over Furman Sunday.
