Blowing Rock has served up three of the 20 finalists in a statewide "fine-dining" competition for Best Dish.

Grand opening of the new complex softball fields
Watauga County Parks and Recreation Department will hold the grand opening of the two new complex softball fields on Thursday, April 23. The grand opening will feature Legends of Watauga County Softball games. Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social to meet and greet friend and there will be concessions sold by Beef O’ Bradys, and JUMP! free for the kids. The games begin at 6:45 p.m. The first pitch will be thrown by Deb Wynn, former Watauga County parks & recreation director. The legends teams are made up of former Watauga County Parks and Recreation league softball players, 45 years of age and older who are true legends of Watauga County softball. The fields are located at the old Ann Marie Drive, next to Watauga County Swim Complex in Boone.

WHS campus back on the block
The current high school facility is going back up on the auction block, several years after the commissioners turned down more than $30 million for the property.

Democrats get local at annual convention
Around 300 people attended the 2009 Watauga County Democratic Party convention Saturday at the county courthouse.

Watauga sheriff’s reports
April 13 — Geoffrey Paul Nelson, 32, of 136 Banjo Hollow Road, Boone, was served with a warrant for arrest on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, felony possession of methamphetamine and simple possession of a schedule IV controlled substance.

Boone Police reports
April 16 – Larceny from a motor vehicle was reported at 9:51 a.m. on the 500 block of Queen Street. A checkbook, an iPod and prescription medications were reported stolen.


Chamber awards recognize outstanding customer service
The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2009 Amazing Customer Service Award winners.

Babies to take over The Rock
The babies are coming. Kidd Brewer Stadium on the campus of Appalachian State University will be taken over for the sake of babies on Sunday.

The building industry is starting to pick up steam, but residential building permits are still lagging behind last year’s totals.

Student charged in multiple graffiti incidents

An Appalachian State University student was arrested Saturday on multiple charges related to graffiti in the Boone town limits.

Town mulls Greenway trail future options
Greenway discussions traveled through the regular Boone Town Council meeting on Thursday. The first Greenway order of business was a request from the greenway, parks and gardens committee. The committee requested the council’s permission to pursue negotiations with the Optimist Club and Appalachian Regional Healthcare System to create a greenway connector from the Wellness Center through Optimistic Park on State Farm Road.

A planet full of celebrations
Wednesday, April 22, is Earth Day, with a variety of events to recognize the environment and commemorate sustainability efforts.

Agricultural map blossoms just in time for travelers
A new map focusing on agritourism features 16 Watauga County farms, bed and breakfast lodges, and food producers, part of a campaign by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture to promote farm products and experiences.


Ducks Unlimited places oysters on its bill of fare for event
Birds of a feather flock together. The High Country Ducks Unlimited and Appalachian State Ducks Unlimited chapters are joining efforts to host the third annual Oyster Roast and Barbecue on Friday, April 24.


Agriculture officials report to the people
The Watauga County branch of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service held its annual “Report to the People” on Monday, with agents presenting updates on the past year’s agricultural and community-service efforts.


MerleFest takes place April 23-26 in Wilkesboro
It’s finally here. If the backed-up traffic, “My Grass is Blue” bumper stickers, and all those raccoon posters haven’t given it away, MerleFest, the High Country’s premier music festival, is officially under way on the campus of Wilkes Community College, from Thursday, April 23, through Sunday, April 26.

Three brush fires reported over weekend
Firefighters in Watauga County were kept busy over the weekend with small brush fires. Three fires damaged a total of nearly three acres.

Boone Police reports
April 9 — Burglary with non-forced entry and larceny were reported at 8:02 a.m. at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.

WNC economy slowed its decline in February
Western North Carolina’s economy declined in February, but at 0.1 percent, it was the smallest decline since mid-2008, according to data compiled in the Western North Carolina Economic Index.

Blaze guts Deep Gap home

A fire heavily damaged a house on Pine Run Road early Friday morning in Deep Gap.
