Sports update: Pioneers take first place
If Watauga’s baseball team was going to put some distance between itself and McDowell, both in their game Thursday night and in the Northwestern 4-A Conference standings, the Pioneers needed to have a big fifth inning.
Sports update: Peterson says ‘no’ to ASU
Former Appalachian State Buzz Peterson said he would not return to coach the Mountaineers Thursday after being offered the job last week, the Charlotte Observer reported on its web site. Peterson, 45, was offered the job after former coach Houston Fancher was relieved of his duties after nine years as head coach. Fancher was also a former assistant to Peterson, who left Appalachian State to coach at Tulsa. Peterson coached at Tennessee one year later and also coached at Coastal Carolina before becoming the director of player personnel with the Charlotte Bobcats.
Hoops returns to Holmes
The Carolina Barnstorming Tour will be rolling through Boone Thursday night when members of North Carolina and Duke’s basketball teams will take on the High Country All-Stars, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
ASU rallies past UT
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Appalachian State overcame a disastrous first inning to top Tennessee 9-7 Tuesday night at blustery Lindsey Nelson Stadium to claim its first win over UT in 19 years.

Appalachian State’s women’s tennis tam slipped past Presbyterian 4-3 Wednesday at the Appalachian tennis courts.

Watauga’s boys’ golf team finished sixth in its weekly Northwestern 4-a Conference tournament held at Orchard Hills Golf Club Monday.

Sports update: Schedule changes
Watauga’s baseball softball and soccer games against Freedom that were postponed Tuesday have been moved to Wednesday. The varsity baseball team will host Freedom beginning at 4:30 p.m. The jayvee game will follow. Watauga’s softball team will play its game at Freedom beginning at 4:30 p.m., with the jayvee game to be played afterward. Watauga will host Freedom on May 8. Watauga’s girls’ soccer game was moved to Freedom and will begin at 5 p.m. The jayvee game will follow. Freedom will play at Watauga on May 8. Watauga’s boys’ tennis match at A.C. Reynolds was postponed. There is no make-up date as of yet.
Lion-hearted Pioneers
When Devin Presnell and Dalton Hardee played baseball at Watauga, they played second base and shortstop and was one of the Northwestern 4-A Conference's top double-play tandem.

Cougars slip past ASU
Brittany Gaston went 3-for-4 to lead the Appalachian State's softball team's offense, but a late innings rally came back just short as ASU fell 6-5 to College of Charleston Sunday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
Storm under-11s take 2nd
The Watauga Storm 11-under boys’ basketball team finished second at the annual War on the Floor tournament held at the the Smokey Mountain Sports Complex in Elizabethton, Tenn. The Storm went 4-1 losing the the final game to the Asheville Gators 51-48. Members of the team include Brody O'Neal, Jaxon Wiley, Caleb Bryson, Holden Russell, Dylan Carmichael, Jeb Phillips, Nicholas Sherman, Tyler Cornett, and Morgan Mckay. Edens silences Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Aubrey Edens allowed just one run over eight innings and Chris Alessandria drove in three runs as Appalachian State beat Furman 4-1, taking its second straight game from the Paladins.
ASU RB learning the ropes
Rod Chisholm remembers when he was a running back at West Charlotte playing Watauga in the semifinals of the 2006 state 4-A playoffs. In fact, he said he remembers all of the details of that game, which ended in a 21-0 West Charlotte victory. One in particular stands out.
Pioneers finish 2-2 in softball tournament
KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Watauga went 2-2 in the four games it played at the Eastman Invitational over the weekend.
