The Reverend Delia Mae Kimball Higgins
Delia Mae "Dee" Higgins, 70, passed away in Boynton Beach, Fla., on Friday, March 20, 2009, after four weeks in recovery from aortic surgery.
She was born in Simmsport, La., on Nov. 28, 1938, to Riley B. Kimball Sr. and Ethel Juneau.
She attented parochial and public schools in New Orleans, La. through graduation from Warren Easton High School and attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Southwestern LA) in Lafayette, La.
In 1957 she married Dr. Lloyd M. Higgins with whom she had six children. Dee and her family moved to High Point, N.C. from Martinsville, Va. in 1970. She was very active in her community serving as President of High Point Medical Auxillary 1976-77. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for 38 years, serving as President of ECW from 1977-78, and held Board appointments on Mental Health Board, the Jail Ministry Board, the Presbyterian Home Advisory Board, and the YWCA Board. She completed a North Carolina Outward Bound Course in 1977.
After raising her six children she attended High Point College (now High Point University) and graduated Cum Laude in Philosophy and Religion 1983. She served as Bereavement Counselor at Hospice of the Piedmont for six years, and attended Wake Forest Graduate School in 1984. She studied for three years in the Diaconate Training program with the Dioscese of N.C., on the Duke University campus, and was ordained Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1989. She then served as Deacon at St. Mary's Episcopal Church of High Point, N.C. until her recent retirement. Dee was instrumental in establishing the Stephen Ministers program at St. Marys. She was a volunteer Chaplain at High Point Regional Hospital and a Chaplain in the Order of St. Luke the Physician.
She was an avid gardener and a member of the American Horticultural Society. Dee was an avid reader and discussion group member with Wilson Quarterly and Dialogue II Book Club. She gave her all to family, friends and community and her presence will be missed by many.
Dee is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 52 years, Lloyd Higgins, of the home; her brother Riley B. Kimball, Jr. and wife Sharon, children Katie and Josh of Fort Worth, Tex.; her step-brothers, David Bowman Kimball and family and Harold Morrell Kimball of Lake Charles, La.; Aunt Vera Porter and family of Louisiana; and cousin Charles Kimball and family of Georgia.
Her six children, their spouses and nine grandchildren are, Scott and Gita Higgins, children Jasmine, Jaclyn and Colton of Indianapolis, Ind.; Sharon Higgins of High Point, N.C.; Emy Higgins of Charleston, S.C.; Katherine Ramsey Higgins Knight and husband Richard, children Ezra and Liam, of Sugar Grove, N.C.; Doug Higgins, children Jack, Lily and Rebecca of Thomasville and Greensboro, N.C.; Brett and Christi Higgins, child Avery of High Point, N.C.
The Higgins family would like to thank each and every one of the many friends and relatives who have supported us and loved us. Dee is in a better place now and free from suffering. She had a wonderful life, family and friends. Thanks be to God!
A visitation took place in the parish hall at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, High Point from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening, March 27. The Memorial Service was also held at St. Mary's on Saturday, March 28, at 11 a.m. Officiating were the Rev. Dr. Robert B. Cook, Jr., and the Rev. Evelyn Morales, and the Rt. Rev. Alfred C. Marble Jr., Assisting Bishop.

Robert James Phillips
Mr. Robert James Phillips, 73, of Alex Wellborn Road, Deep Gap, died Tuesday evening, March 31, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center. 
He was born March 16, 1936 in Mecklenburg County, a son of Lynn and Lucille Phillips Sloop.
Mr. Phillips was a member of Stony Fork Baptist Church. He was in charge of security at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock for l5 years, a former deputy with the Watauga County Sheriffs Department, and for 16 years was employed by Orlando Paving Company in Florida. Mr. Phillips was a member of Ashler Masonic Lodge #373 and Snow Lodge #363. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Verbie Sue Watson Phillips; one daughter, Regina Sue Preston and husband, Chris, of Virginia; two grandchildren, Reo Jay and Bonita Sue Phillips; one great-grandson, Reo James Phillips, all of Florida; two step-grandchildren, Jon and Anna Preston, both of Virginia; and three sisters, Pat Greene and husband, Carl, and Cecilia Staskus, and husband Paul, all of Florida, and Deloris Darr, of Georgia. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by one son, Reo James Phillips; one daughter, Jennifer Lynne Phillips; and one sister, Shirley Mandosa.
Services will be conducted Friday morning, April 3, 2009, at 11 o’clock at Stony Fork Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Vernon Eller and the Rev. Billy Norris. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 until 11 o’clock. Military graveside and Masonic graveside rites will follow in the Watson Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8:30 at Austin & Barnes.

Dick Townsend
Mr. Dick Townsend, 89 of Granite Falls, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 26, 1919 in Watauga County, to the late Aaron T. Townsend and Myra Adeline Berry.
Mr. Townsend was a member of Harris Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bina Eggers Townsend; daughters, Reba Helms of Granite Falls, and Martha Annas and husband, Jerry, of Granite Falls; seven grandchildren, Melissa Phillips and husband, Eldridge, Susan Wilson and husband, Gwyn, Stephanie Tramble and husband, Andy, Kim Bumgarner and husband, Warren, Tammy Townsend, Jamye Wilson and husband, Adam, and Steven Annas; nine great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Charlene Townsend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jack Townsend; six brothers; four sisters; and son-in-law, Gordon Helms.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 3, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the Sunrise Baptist Church with the Rev. Edd Warren officiating. The family received friends on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Bass-Smith Granite from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sunrise Baptist Church Cemetery.

Elizabeth Johnson Combs
Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Combs, 91, of Vilas, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at her home.
She was born Jan. 11, 1918 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Lewis and Dora Winebarger Johnson.
Mrs. Combs was a homemaker and a member of Henson Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include five sons, Howard L. Combs and wife, Betty, of West Jefferson, David L. Combs and wife, Donna, of Gibsonville, N.C., J. Paul Combs and wife, Polly, of Boone, Kenneth H. Combs and wife, MaryAnn, of Mountain City, and Billy G. Combs and wife, Kathy, of Boone; one daughter, Dorothy "Dot" Gragg of Boone; and 13 grandchildren, Joy Cobb and husband, Darrell, of McLeansville, Barbara Myers and husband, Bradley, of Zionville, Kimberly Greene and husband, Joe, of Deep Gap, Paula Ferguson and husband, Matt, of Moravian Falls, Amy Combs of Charlotte, Jennifer Dillon and husband, Brandon, of Chugiak, Alaska, Brooke Huffman and husband, Judd, Todd Combs and wife, Lori, and Mitchell Gragg and wife, Tammy, all of Boone, Ken Combs and wife, Angie, of Mountain City, Nolan Combs of Charlotte, Brandon Combs and wife, Laura, of Antelope, Ore., and Brady Combs and wife, Austin, of Austin, Tex. Services will be conducted Thursday morning, April 2, 2009, at 11:00 o'clock, at Henson Chapel United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Pastor Judy Eurey. Burial will follow in Henson Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Paris Ragan Winebarger
Mrs. Paris Ragan Winebarger, 86, of Meat Camp Road, Boone and Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation, died Monday morning, March 30, 2009 at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born in Watauga County, May 15, 1922, a daughter of George Carter Ragan Sr. and Maude Grogan Ragan.
Mrs. Winebarger graduated valedictorian from Elkland High School in Todd and retired from TRW. She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. She volunteered in the community for organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Green Valley Homemaker Association, United Methodist Women's Club and with the elementary school tutoring program.
Survivors include her three daughters, June Kendall-Goins and husband, Chuck, of Chapel Hill, Joyce Mitchell, and Pat Kohles, and husband, Art, of Boone; and one son, Bobby Winebarger, and wife, Barbara, of Greenville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen R. Brown, of Boone; and one brother, Robert “Bob” Ragan, of Greensboro. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Clyde Winebarger; one sister, Mary Dee Cooke; and one brother, George Carter Ragan, Jr.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Hopewell United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Cindy K. Shelton. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1 until 2 o'clock, one hour prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of a daughter, Pat Kohles, 1401 Meat Camp Road, Boone. Special thanks to the Glenbridge Health Care staff for their on-going support and care – especially “Dr.” Larry and “Dr.” Scott.

Georgina Irene Brandhuber
Georgina Irene Brandhuber Georgina May Irene LaRochelle Brandhuber went to be with the Lord on March 25, 2009.
She was born June 14, 1912 in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. She moved from Toronto, Canada to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in 1951. As a devout Catholic, she served the Lord faithfully at her churches in Dania, Fla. and Boone, N.C.
She was affectionately known as "May" to all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Harold J. Brandhuber; her son, Kenneth R. Morley; her daughters, Yvonne Bastain and Melodie Stafford; four grandsons; three granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and one great-grandaughter. She is also survived by Harold's daughter, Sharon Sprissler; his sons, Fred, Donald, and Harold Jr. and their children (11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Extraordinary appreciation and loving thanks to grandson Tom Brandhuber and his wife, Michelle, of Brooksville, Fla.
A special thank you also to Anita Hampson, May's niece, of Whitby, Ontario, Canada and to Audrey and Neil Hartly of Boone, N.C., who were more than dear friends.
Final burial will be in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Canada.
A memorial service will be held on April 2, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Turner Funeral Homes, 14360 Spring Hill Drive, in Spring Hill, Fla.
She will be missed by all who loved her.
Linda Elaine Bridges
Linda Elaine Bridges, 52, of Meadow Hill Apartments, Boone, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at her home.
She was born Feb. 13, 1957 in Burlington, to Alease Horne Bridges and the late Willie Andrew Bridges.
Linda was a graduate of Appalachian State University, majoring in Psychology. Before early retirement, she was employed by AppalCART as an executive secretary. She was a member of Boone Central Assembly of God.
Survivors include her mother, Alease Horne Bridges of Burlington; one sister, Bobbie Sue Bridges Willard and husband, Mitchell, of Boone; one brother, Willie Dwight Bridges and wife, Glenda, of Fayetteville; four nieces, Annie Meyers and husband, Chris, of Asheville, Meagan Elizabeth Bridges of Damascus, Syria, Casey Leigh and Emma Frances Willard, both of Boone; and one great-nephew, Judson Patrick Meyers of Asheville.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Hilda Alease Bridges; maternal grandparents, Lee George and Wencie Elizabeth Sanders Horne; and paternal grandparents, Hubert Worth and Glena Mae Stell Bridges.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon, March 30, at 3 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Charles Bristle. Mrs. Frances E. Eldreth, 90, of 706 Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, died Saturday afternoon, March 28, 2009, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born Nov. 18, 1918 in Ashe County, a daughter of the late Jesse Arthur Eldreth and Rosa Landreth Eldreth.
Mrs. Eldreth was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Chapel Baptist Church in Lansing, N.C.
Survivors include two daughters, Fern Ragan and husband, John, of Eden, and Lois Carroll and husband, Sterling, of Boone; three granddaughters, Allison Idol and husband, Bobby, of Boone, Amy DiChristina and husband, Cary, of Atlanta, Ga., and Sarah Smith and husband, Keith, of Austin, Tex.; four great-granddaughters, Maggie and Callie Idol of Boone, Sydney Smith of Austin, Tex., and Sophia DiChristina of Atlanta; two great-grandsons, Austin Idol of Boone, and Ethan Smith of Austin, Tex. She is also survived by her special friends, Curtis and Julie Miller of Boone, Kirk and Denise Nowery of Boone, Dr. Charlie and Dottie Sykes of Boone, and the staff of Blowing Rock Extended Care and friends from Samaritan's Purse.

Wanda Lee Harmon
Wanda Lee Harmon, 56, of Boone, passed away March 25, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Her family will remember her as a loving mother and devoted grandmother who had a deep compassion for others. She loved sewing and crafts of all types and was a talented artisan whose folk art was exhibited in area museums. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and was famous for her home-made jams and jellies.
Wanda Lee Harmon was born in Watauga County, July 12, 1952, the daughter of the late Clyde and Eureka Harmon. She lived most of her life in the Boone area.
Survivors include a daughter, Melissa, and her husband, John Goodpasture, of Weaverville; three granddaughters, Hope, Zoe, and Abby Goodpasture of Weaverville; brothers, Cecil Harmon and wife, Pauline, of Banner Elk, and Jimmy Harmon and wife, Diane, of Zionville; sisters, Sue Rominger and husband, Paul, of Banner Elk; Faye Pressnell and husband, Paul, of Banner Elk; and Louise Lombardo and husband, Mark, of Micaville. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Len Harmon.
At her request, her remains were donated to the medical school at Duke University. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
The family requests no flowers or food at this time.
Sharon Marie Lanouette
Sharon Marie Lanouette, 53, of West Jefferson, died on March 22, 2009 at the Watauga Medical Center, Boone, N.C.
She leaves many friends whose lives she touched with her warm, caring, compassionate spirit.
As she wished, arrangements were made with ScienceCare of Aurora, CO.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Sharon's life at the Family Central Community Center, 626 Ashe Central School Road, Jefferson, N.C. on April 3rd at 2:00.
Gaile C. Hammond Madron
Mrs. Gaile C. Hammond Madron, 88, of Mountain City, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Mountain City Care Center, following a lengthy illness.
She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Myrtle Penley Hammond.
Mrs. Madron was a native of Okangon County, Wash., and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She and her late husband, Earl Madron, spent 43 years together in the Neva community. She was a homemaker, worked at Blackburn’s Supermarket, Peoples Drug Store, Boone Trail Dairy Bar and Johnson County Hospital.
Mrs. Madron was active in church, school and community activities. Her hobbies were gardening and embroidery.
Survivors include three daughters, Hilda and husband, Toll Lewis, of Mountain City; Hallie and McArthur Williams of Mountain City; and Helen Treadway of Virginia; one son, John Madron and wife, Sandra, of Florence, S.C.; one sister, Dorothy Kynell of Canada; one brother, George Thomas of Concord, N.C.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Sue Parsons of Mountain City, Lois Wills of Mountain City, and Jackie Thomas of Concord, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents; her husband, Earl Madron; daughter, Hope Payne; granddaughter, Robin Madron Foxworth; brother, Junior Hammond; two sons-in-law, Gene Treadway and Marion Payne; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Eller, Millie Seiss and Ruth Seehorn; six brothers-in-law, Curtis Madron, Bill Eller, Jim Parsons, Bob Wills, Dick Seiss, and Reed Seehorn; preceded her in death.
Services were conducted at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 29, 2009, from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Norman, the Rev. Ricky Campbell, Mr. Harry Wills and Mr. Jim Hutchinson, officiating.
Interment was in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Harold W. Pedigo
Mr. Harold W. Pedigo, 93, of Monmouth, Ill.; passed away at his home in Monmouth, on Tuesday afternoon, March 24, 2009.
He was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of George Elmer and Louesa O. Latham Pedigo.
Mr. Pedigo was raised in Monmouth where he attended Monmouth Public Schools and graduated from Monmouth High School. Before he went to college he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then attended Monmouth College. Harold married Ruth M. Yenerich on June 10, 1941 in Dixon, Ill.
Harold entered the United States Army attaining the rank of Master Sgt. serving in Hawaii where he assembled and organized the Military Post Office during World War II. After service, Harold returned to work in Monmouth at the United States Post Office where he served 42 years as a rural carrier and clerk. He and Ruth formerly were members of First Baptist Church of Monmouth where he served as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, as the church moderator and church handyman. He also sang in the church choir. Harold has been an active member of Faith United Presbyterian Church to the present.
Mr. Pedigo enjoyed wood working and constructing many projects for friends and family including "Sturdy" foot stools and "Edgewood Looms", gardening and fruit trees and church. He also served as a Scout Leader in earlier years.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth of Monmouth, Ill.; two daughters, Carol M. Phoenix and John, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Julia A. Pedigo of Boone, N.C.; one son, James D. Pedigo and Lynne, of East Moline, Ill.; three grandchildren, Clinton, Sarah, and Lucas; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving is Harold's sister, Betty Grove of Naples, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Gwen Walker and Mary Armstrong; and five brothers, Elmer "Bill" Pedigo, Jr., Robert, "Toncey", Hollis, and Jack Pedigo.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. Cremation was accorded following the service. Mr. Pedigo's family received friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth.
A memorial fund is being established for the Ruth Yenerich Pedigo Vocal Music Endowment Fund of the Monmouth Roseville Educational Foundation.

Fausteen Lipford Sanders
Ms. Fausteen Lipford Sanders, 84, of 216 Tater Hill Road, Zionville, N.C., passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009, in Glen Bridge Health and Rehab, Boone, N.C.
She was the daughter of the late B.C. Lipford and Mae Jones Lipford.
Ms. Sanders was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Zionville, N.C. and was an employee of Hillbilly Trading Post for 20 years. Her hobbies included quilting, sewing and gardening.
Survivors include one daughter, Caroline Castle and husband, Lewis, of Zionville, N.C.; one granddaughter, Amy Davis and husband, Mike, of Zionville, N.C.; one great-grandchild, Megan Davis of Zionville, N.C.; special in-law, Opal Castle of Boone, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Juanita Sanders, Bertha Wilson and Beulah Sanders, all of Zionville, N.C.; two brothers, Buford Lipford and Boyd Lipford, both of Mountain City, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Will Sanders, in 1965; one sister, Norma South; five brothers, Dagle, Raymond, Perry, Ralph and Gary Lipford; and special friend, Vesta Lee Wheeler.
Services were conducted at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with the Rev. David Bentley officiating. Graveside service and interment was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2009, from Lipford Cemetery.

Jean Norris Tolbert
Ms. Jean Norris Tolbert, 75, of 105 Laurel Fork Church Road, Boone, died Friday morning, March 27, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born March 9, 1933 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Allie Spencer Norris and Mae Church Norris.
Ms. Tolbert was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sabra Townsend and husband, Bobby, and Becky Cox and husband, Lucky, all of Boone; one granddaughter, Ellen Shook and husband, Glenn, of Deep Gap; two grandsons, Eddie Townsend and wife, Amy, of Deep Gap, and Michael Cox of Wytheville, Va.; one great-granddaughter, Hayla Shook of Deep Gap; two great-grandsons, Hunter Shook and Brahm Townsend, both of Deep Gap; and also by her Glenbridge family.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon, March 30, 2009, at 2:00 o'clock, at Laurel Fork Baptist Church.
The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock.
Officiating will be Dr. Daniel Featherstone and Mr. Bill Hartley. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family received friends Sunday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Johnson L. Wellborn
Mr. Johnson L. Wellborn, 85, of Joe Greer Road, Deep Gap, died Sunday morning, March 29, 2009, at his home.
He was born Feb. 3, 1924 in Watauga County, to John Sherman and Nancy Greene Wellborn.
Mr. Wellborn was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he was a member of the choir and served on the Church Council. He co-founded Watauga Building Supply in 1964 and was active in the business until his retirement in 1988. A 60 year Mason, he was a member of Ashler Lodge 373, the Scottish Rite and the Appalachian Shrine Club. Johnson loved restoring and driving his Model A automobiles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Kathleen Miller Wellborn; his daughter, Vickie Shaki and husband, Abraham, of Fleetwood; his son, Kevin Wellborn and wife, Jane, of Boone; three grandchildren, Aaron and Abby Shaki and Katie Wellborn; and two sisters, Jennie Wellborn Hollars of Wilkesboro and Carolyn Greene Austin of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Wellborn Parker; and three brothers, Russell, Newland and Edward Wellborn, Sr.
Services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Timothy Smith, Pastor John Bollinger and Pastor Sarah Lang. The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 10 until 11 o’clock, one hour prior to services, at the church. Masonic graveside rites and burial will follow in the Gap Creek Cemetery.
