Rhea Eddie Graham Bentley
Mr. Rhea Eddie Graham Bentley, 56, of 2977 Green Haven Drive, Morganton, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
He was born July 7, 1952 in Watauga County, a son of the late Clyde and Virginia Hampton Bentley.
Mr. Bentley was a former firefighter with the Foscoe Fire Department. He served in the Marine Corp, and was a former commander of Chapter 90 for the Disabled American Veterans. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three sisters, Shirley Shook Thomas and husband, John, of Boone, Barbara Hollers and husband, Karl, of Vero Beach, Fla., and Mertis Auton of Palm Bay, Fla.; and three brothers, Harley Bentley of Vero Beach, John Bentley and wife, Belinda, of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Byron Bentley of Rockledge, Fla. He is also survived by nine nephews, three nieces, and his extended family of special friends, and the Marine Corp League.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Gail Bentley; and a brother-in-law, John H. Shook.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday afternoon, March 21, 2009, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Larry Campbell and Dr. Sonny Younce. Military graveside rites and burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00 o'clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

C.P. Calloway Sr.
Mr. C.P. Calloway, Sr., 80, of Hunting Road, Boone, died Sunday morning, March 15, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Watauga County, Oct. 23, 1928, a son of the late Vance and Faye Perry Calloway.
Mr. Calloway retired after 36 years as a Quality Assurance Manager from TRW/IRC. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for over 35 years. He was a member of the Keystone Sunday School Class, and a founding member of the Watauga County Rescue Squad.
Mr. Calloway was also a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served in the Construction Battalion. He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College, and taught math and science at Blowing Rock High School. He was an Eagle Scout and an avid gardener.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Greene Calloway; one daughter, Annie Calloway of Boone; two sons, Andy Calloway and wife, Kim, of Concord and Clifton Calloway and wife, Shon, of Rock Hill, S.C.; four granddaughters, Dana Calloway-Landress, Mollie Calloway, Casey Calloway, and Sally Calloway; two grandsons, Luke Calloway and Garret Calloway; one sister, Betty Jane Fox of Whitman, Mass.; and a number of nieces and nephews
Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Oak Grove Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Scott Courtney. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Jane Randolph DeMott
Mrs. Jane Randolph DeMott, 81, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born Dec. 20, 1927 in Ithaca, N.Y., a daughter of the late Lowell Fitz Randolph and Fannie Rane Randolph.
Mrs. DeMott was educated in the Ithaca School System and later enrolled and graduated from The Putney School in Putney, Vt. She enrolled in Cornell University, in Ithaca and graduated with a B.A. degree with the class of 1948. While at Cornell, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theda Soroity's Iona Chapter. After graduating, Mrs. DeMott worked for the Hanes Department Store in Newark, N.J.
In 1970, she married the Reverend Richard A. DeMott, and resided in New York City. Mrs. DeMott was involved in church choirs and an active volunteer counselor for the Rockland Volunteer Counseling Service. This latter activity propelled her into pursuing a graduate degree in social work. She gained a M.S.W. Degree, with counseling as a specialty, from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 1973.
After her husband's retirement in 1996, they moved to Watauga County and settled in the town of Seven Devils. Mrs. DeMott continued to pursue her hobbies of spinning and weaving, horticulture, knitting, and church activities.
Survivors include her husband, Richard A. DeMott of Banner Elk; three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Stewart and husband, Jeffrey, of Greenwich, Conn., Carolyn Jane Wilksie of Trumansburg, N.Y., and Frances Jane Wilksie-Ibbra and husband, Husto, of Landrum, S.C.; one son, George Randolph Wilksie and wife, Chris, of Ithaca, N.Y.; and one brother, Robert Fitz Randolph of Vero Beach, Fla. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Rane Randolph.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday morning, March 21, 2009, at 11:00 o'clock, at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church. Officiating will be Father Rick Lawler and the Right Reverend Gary Gloster.
The reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Sadie B. Greene
Mrs. Sadie B. Greene, 72, of 4721 Wildcat Road, Deep Gap, died Tuesday evening, March 17, 2009, at Glenbridge Health Care Center.
She was born Sept. 3, 1936 in Pulaska, Va., a daughter of the late Charlie and Lilly Williams Bratton.
Mrs. Greene was a retired employee of Marsh Furniture Company and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth L. Greene; one daughter, Donna Greene Cline and husband, David, of Asheboro; and one son, Dwight Greene of Greensboro. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolyn Greene and Brenda Haught; one sister; and five brothers.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon, March 19, 2009, at 1:00 o'clock, at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Eric Proffitt, the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn, Pastor Rick Cornejo and the Rev. Randall Greene. Burial followed in the Cornerstone Baptist Church Cemetery.

Darold Lee ‘Pop’ Hedrick
Mr. Darold Lee “Pop” Hedrick, 80, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Monday evening, March 16, 2009, at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.
He was born May 29, 1928 in St. Cloud, Fla., a son of the late Lemmon and Cecil Marie Cottrell Hedrick.
Mr. Hedrick was a member and deacon at Three Forks Baptist Church. “Pop” was a World War II Navy Veteran and was retired from Vermont American.
Surviving are one son, Mike Hedrick and wife, Delores, of Boone; three grandchildren, Jonathan Hedrick and Jack Hackney of Boone, and Laura Hackney of Wilmington; and one sister, Anne Carter of St. Cloud, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemmon and Cecil Marie Cottrell Hedrick; his wife, Zela Agnes Gragg Hedrick; one daughter, Jeanette Hedrick Davis; and two brothers, Lewis and Bert Hedrick.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Eric Proffit and the Rev. Rick Critcher. The body will lie in state at the church from noon until 1 o’clock. Military graveside rites and burial will follow in the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Pennington Kirk
Mrs. Margaret Pennington Kirk, 88, of Boone, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at Life Care of Banner Elk.
She was born Sept. 1, 1920 in Summerfield, N.C., to Willie and Ethel Ellen Yelberton Pennington.
Mrs. Kirk was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, and a former member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church in Kannapolis. She was a homemaker and a medical receptionist.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy Sink and husband, Samuel, of Boone and Patty Hinshaw of Binghamton, N.Y.; one granddaughter, Amy Lynne Sink of Washington, D.C.; two grandsons, Damon Hinshaw and wife, Peggy, of Alexandria, Va. and Darren Scott Sink of Durham, N.C.; one great-grandson, Benjamin Hinshaw; and one sister, Garleen Graham, of Greenville, S.C.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Clyde Kluttz; by her second husband, Roy Simmerell Kirk; her parents, Willie and Ethel Ellen Yelberton Pennington; and by one brother, C.D. Pennington.
Services will be conducted Friday, March 20, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tim Smith. Graveside services and burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Horace Lee Nance
Mr. Horace Lee Nance, 85, of Burlington, N.C., slipped peacefully into the presence of his Creator on the morning of March 13, 2009 after years of chronic illness and a brief period of acute heart failure.
He was born in Winston Salem and was a life-long resident of Burlington.
“Nance,” as he was called by his wife and friends, served our country in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps, (predecessor to the US Air Force.) As a bombardier with the 454th squadron of the 323rd Bomb Group, he flew 36 missions in Europe, beginning during the Battle of the Bulge and continuing until the end of the war in Europe. After returning from the war, he attended NC State University.
He was a voracious reader and never stopped learning. He was a talented woodworker and a meticulous craftsman. Astronomy, genealogy, fishing, horses, and counting the tomatoes from his summer garden were some of his other favorite pastimes. He liked to cook and create never before heard of dishes to try on his family! More than anything, though, he loved his family! He worked faithfully to support his wife and children until he was physically unable to do so. Thirty five of those years were as an industrial engineer with Western Electric, and after retiring he and his wife operated Shamrock Picture Framing for over 25 years.
Mr. Nance spent the last 32 years as an active member of Burlington Assembly of God, and in it’s inception was instrumental in the development of the local chapter of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge rehabilitation program.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Betty Oakley Nance, with whom he created a legacy that includes four children, 6 grandchildren and all the generations that will follow. Their children are Scott Nance and Debbie Wilson (Gerry) of Burlington, Amy Nelson (Kirby) of Boone, and Carmen Nance Sanders of Solomons, Md. He was the son of Richard Guy and Sarah Viola Scott Nance of Forsyth County, both deceased. He is survived by his brother, Jack G. Nance of Winston Salem, and was preceded in death by another brother, Richard Nance of Badin Lake, and sisters Ruth Neeley and Beulah Colter of Winston-Salem.
We will greatly miss “Daddy,” “Poppy,” “Nance,” but will for the rest of our lives remember the things he contributed to us.
Visitation was at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home on Monday, March 16 at 11:45. Service was held at 1:00 p.m. in the Rich and Thompson Chapel.

Mrs. Joyce Cornett Rominger, 73, of Sharon, Pa., a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Sunday, March 15, 2009.
She was born Feb. 19, 1936, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Ted and Lavotha Dotson Cornett.
Mrs. Rominger was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Rick Rominger and wife, Maureen, of Sharon, Pa.; and two daughters, Debbie Norris and husband, David, of Lenoir, and Joy Rutter and husband, Rick, of Harrisburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Ross and Hannah Rominger, Carly and Jarrett Rutter, and Richard Weaver; two sisters, Theresa Boyd of Johnson City, Tenn., and Peggy Cornett of the Foscoe community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Rominger; two brothers, Ralph and Ted Cornett; and a half-brother, John D. Hodges.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday evening, March 20, 2009, at 7:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Jeffery Sweeney.

Arlene Crutchfield Dennis, 64, of 265 Trout Lake Road, Deep Gap, died Wednesday morning, March 11, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
She was born Nov. 20, 1944 in Wyoming County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Herbert Crutchfield, Sr. and Beulah Adams Crutchfield.
Mrs. Dennis was a retired accountant for Konrady Development and a member of The Boone Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, Riley Dennis; one daughter, Tammy Veil, and one son, Hank Veil, Jr., both of Charlotte; one step-daughter, Christie Ingram and husband, Thomas, of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Eric Ingram and wife, Cristina, Isaac Ingram, and Andra Ingram; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Ingram and Francesca Ingram; and three brothers, Jesse Crutchfield, Charles Crutchfield, and Herbert Crutchfield, all of Virginia. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie Frances Crutchfield, Wilma Jean Crutchfield, and Bobbie Jo Crutchfield; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Charles Robert Loretto
Mr. Charles Robert Loretto, 75, of Clear View Lane, Boone, died Saturday afternoon, March 14, 2009 at his home.
He was born May 20, 1933 in Jersey City, N.J., to Charles and Ann Richter Loretto.
Mr. Loretto was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a retired structural engineer.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred S. Loretto; one son, Robert Loretto and wife, Judith, and two grandchildren, Kira and Krissa Loretto, all of Toms River, N.J.; and his son-in-law, Stan Michael of Jacksonville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Michael.

James Marvin Potter Sr.
Mr. James Marvin Potter, Sr., 88, of 609 East Pulaski Highway, Elkton, Md., a former resident of Watauga County, died Thursday morning, March 12, 2009, at his home.
He was born May 7, 1920 in Lodi, Va., a son of the late Romuel Lennie Potter and Clara Annie Martin Potter.
Mr. Potter was a retired machinist for the Chrysler Corporation and the Motor Wheel Corporation in Wilmington, Dela. He was a member of Elk Knob Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Maxine Ross and husband, Tom, of Bowling Green, Ky., Eulene Head of Newark, Dela., Sue Butler and husband, Jack, of Elkton, Md., and Peggy Ellis and husband, Larry, of the Foscoe community; two sons, James "Jimmy" Potter, Jr. and wife, Mae, of West Jefferson, and Jerry Potter of Elkton, Md.; one step-son, Michael "Mike" Smith and wife, Betty, of Boone; two step-daughters, Geneva Tolbert and husband, Bill, of Edenton, and Virginia Coffey of Salisbury; a son-in-law, Rodney Robinson, Sr. of Elkton; one sister, Gertrude Orr of Knoxville, Tenn.; and one brother, Walt Potter and wife, Janice, of Sun City, Fla. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bina P. Potter; his second wife, Josephine Irene Main Potter; his third wife, Ola Watson Smith Potter; one daughter, Roxanne P. Robinson; one grandson, Rodney Robinson, Jr.; a step-daughter, Sue Wright; two sisters, Lucille Main and Euella South; and two brothers, Birchie Potter and Roy Potter.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon, March 16, 2009, at 1:00 o'clock, at Watauga Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 12:00 until 1:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. R.D. Watson, the Rev. Delmar James, and the Rev. Zane Tester. Military graveside rites and burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Robert Dale ‘Bob’ Scott
Mr. Robert Dale “Bob” Scott, 59, Mt. Sterling, N.C., passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his residence.
A native of Watauga County, he was the son of Delmar J. Scott of Boone, N.C. and the late Victoria Jestes Scott.
Mr. Scott was a very proud U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Era. He was employed by Appalachian State University for 25 years, he retired as a telecommunications technician.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, Darlene Caldwell Scott; two daughters, Kelly Scott of Hudson, N.C. and Linda Scott of Asheville, N.C.; one sister, Maxine Wood of Monterey, Tenn.; and one brother, Warren Davis of Ingleside, Tex.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jeanne Walters; and one brother, Wayne Davis.
A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2009, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Carleene Finger officiating. Military honors were conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family received friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Charles Mack Townsend, 84, of Banner Elk, the Dutch Creek Community, died Saturday morning, March 14, 2009 at home.
He was born in Watauga County, Oct. 31, 1924, a son of the late Isaac Enzer and Clemmie Byrd Townsend.
Mr. Townsend was a retired carpenter and farmer and was a member of Clarks Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter; Wanda Cline and husband, George; two sons, Charles Edward Townsend and wife, Lorene, and Larry Dale Townsend, all of the Dutch Creek Community; one sister, Beulah Gregory of Angier, N.C.; three brothers, Robert “Bob” Townsend of Vilas, Johnny Townsend of Foscoe and Bill Townsend and wife, Rachel, of Valle Crucis; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Isaacs of Banner Elk; one brother-in-law, Truett Coffey and wife, Joyce, of Mountain City; 12 grandchildren, Charlie and Travis Townsend, Marie and Chad Cole, Amy Cline, Scott and Jessie Townsend, Mitchell and Alicia Townsend, Shannon and Alania Townsend, and Rose Marie Hillard; and three great-grandchildren, Mack Able Townsend, Lye Rose Townsend and Abbey Cole; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Ollie Sanders Woods
Mrs. Ollie Sanders Woods, 89, of Lenoir, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 in Gateway Nursing Center in Lenoir.
She was born March 25, 1919 in Wilkes County, a daughter of the late Gran and Celia Church Sanders; and the wife of the late Vaughn Raymond Woods.
Mrs. Woods was a homemaker and a member of Green Mountain Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Aldridge and husband, Leon, of Hudson; three sons, Bill Woods and wife, Phyllis, of Lenoir, James Woods and wife, Geraldine, of Triplett, and Jackie Woods and wife, Debra, of Lenoir; one sister, Amelia "Milia" Adams and husband, Luther, of Buffalo; one brother, Stuard Sanders of Wilkesboro; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Audrey Sanders and Goldie Church; and one brother, Romie Sanders.
A celebration of Mrs. Woods’ life was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Green Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Keever officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The family respectfully requests memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.
